By: Allen Snipes

Today we are living in a world of computers. Every house, organization, railway station, airport and hospital has computers. But does can anyone guess what led to the invention of computers. Some fifteen years back people used only typewriters for patent work. Those period computers where not so prominent. Even a court clerk uses the manual typewriter to type documents and other matters. One cannot regret the real fact that Antique typewriters are behind the success for this era’s computer keyboard.

Even though there is no specific period when the first typewriter was introduced, there is a belief that first vintage typewriter was manufactured in 1800. But this was not available for sale that time. The most antique and vintage typewriter manufactured in early 1870’s was writing ball machine which was invented in Denmark. This beautiful machine looked like a pincushion. Even though this antique typewriter was attractive the sale was not to the level expected.

The antique and vintage typewriter that was commercialized was in 1874 invented by Christopher Lathem Choles. Remington and sons were the proud manufacturer of this vintage machine. This antique and vintage typewriter was decorated with hand painted floral groupings and was looking attractive. And in 1890’s there was huge demand for typewriters and hence there was competition in manufacturing more typewriters with different models. The manufacturers wants to attract its customers and this was the period when curved keyboard typewriters, double keyboard typewriters and no keyboard typewriters were manufactured. Even today there are people worldwide who are interested in purchasing this type of antique and vintage typewriters.

Some technical changes were implemented in the 1940’s typewriters. The beautiful looking antique typewriters had four rows of keys. The specialty of this typewriter is that one can see what they have typed.

Even though some antique and vintage typewriters with circular keyboard did not popularize, the mechanical evolution of this era is derived from the antique typewriters only. The antique and vintage typewriters are praise worthy. Even today there are people whose hobbies are to collect the antique typewriters and keep them as show piece in their room.
