Background Checks Explained

By: Simon M Skinner

Now, more than ever before, background checks are crucial to our success as a business owner or property renter. Today’s world is full of dishonesty; identify theft, and many other various forms of crime. Someone walking into our business to fill out an application or calling us wanting to rent our property may look seemingly harmless, but a simple employee screening or background screening could divulge the real truth.

Of course, not everyone is this way, but it is important to take the steps to avoid having any trouble as much as you possibly can. We all can imagine, even if we have never personally experienced it, what could happen if we were to hire a new employee and it turns out that maybe, they have a history of theft, a bad employment history, or worse.

You are facing a possible loss of time, money, and potentially a fatal decision in regards to your business. Not saying that it could be avoid at all costs, but a good step in the right direction is to perform background checks on every new potential hire, before you make the ultimate decision.

The same applies to rental proper owners or managers. If you rent to someone who has a bad history of payment, well you could be looking at a loss of income. Perhaps they will not pay their rent, as they should, then this leads to court costs, the eviction process, which could all take months. At the same time, someone is using your property, essentially free, when it would be more useful to occupy the space with someone who will pay.

Background screening and checks are crucial to any person who has something to lose. This might mean your business, your property, and even your money. Here are some of the benefits of background checks:

For Business Owners:

1.Is the person really who they say they are? – Does the social security number belong to that person, is the address correct?

2.Court and Criminal Records – Are they a sexual predator? Do they have a criminal history? Are they a high risk for insurance – such as historically bad driving or accidents?

3.Employee Screening – Do they really have the licenses or certificates they claim? How is their history employment wise? Do they have the education as stated?

For Property Owners:

1.Verification Of Individuals – Are they who they say they are?

2.Rental History – Where have they lived in the past?

3.Criminal Records – Are they predators? Criminals? Do they have a history of harmful criminal activity or drug use?

4.Credit – Do they pay their rent on time? Do they pay their bills on time? Are they currently in or have been in bankruptcy?

5.Job Verification – How is their employment history? Do they keep a job long enough? Is their income stable enough?

6.Court Records – Do they have any judgments against them from previous landlords?

Knowing all of this information can help you in making the best possible decisions regarding your property and business. Background checks and employee screening are crucial to the success of your business or rental outlook all the way around.
