Burglar Security Tips For The Apartment Tenant

By: Paul Proctor

Home security is one of the most important considerations for any person who owns or rents his or her apartment. Simple burglar security can consist of having chain bolts and deadbolt locks on the doors, and windows that lock. Advanced burglar security can consist of area motion sensors, window vibration or breakage sensors, full-time video surveillance, and an alarm tapped directly into the telephone system.

Even if your neighborhood has excellent police and fire protection, you are much better off preventing a crime than dealing with its aftermath. One door or window, unlocked for just one minute, is enough of an opportunity for a burglar to get into your home or apartment and steal your valuables such as computers, money, passports, jewelry, or mobile phones.

Some other very simple things that can improve your apartment security include a peephole for the front door, as well as having an intercom installed at the closest main entrance. It would be even better to have a video intercom if there's not a doorman monitoring that entrance. It's also worth considering installing a closed circuit television system to monitor the other doors around the perimeter of the building.

If you are moving into a new apartment, then you should consider having the locks changed for the doors. When package deliveries are made to your door, you should always request to see their identification when opening the door. Whenever you go out, even if just to post a letter or to go out shopping, you should always ensure that all windows and doors are locked, even the sliding door on the balcony.

Here are some additional tips to improve your burglar security. Get a small safe to provide further protection for small, valuable items in your apartment. Buy renter's insurance to protect yourself from the financial consequences of theft, as well as fire or water damage originating from other apartment dwellers. Talk to your neighbors, so that you can better identify which people that enter the building shouldn't be there.

One of the most common ways for a stranger to get inside a locked building is to press all the buzzers in the hope that at least one neighbor will unlock the door for them. Combined with the mistake of leaving a spare key under a mat, or in some easily guessed location, and you may find yourself coming home to an empty apartment. As a last tip, you should only use your surname and initials on any nameplates that you choose to have updated.
