Collecting Vinyl Records- A Passion For Sound

By: Robert Benson

As CD sales sour, the music industry is evolving in a peculiar way. Music lovers’ are turning their attention to the past, reverting back to vinyl records.

For some it is an enjoyable hobby, recapturing a part of their youth. Yet for others, collecting vinyl records is a passion, as they scour the online web sites, record conventions, garage and rummage sales and small resale shops to secure their favorite records and add to their collecting collage of vinyl.

However, if you were to ask them why records are so appealing most will tell you it is the sound of vinyl that is the most enjoyable. They may be tired of the sterile music reproduction of a cd or digitized download. You will hear the term, “vinyl just has a warmer sound” or that they love the experience, an almost ritualistic pattern that is involved in playing a vinyl record.

But I think the best way to describe the sound that vinyl exudes is an analogy I like to use. A vinyl record is like a “fingerprint” of the recorded music. There is a clearness and clarity to the music, and the sound is actually captured and etched into the grooves of the records. Conversely, digital sound is like a copy of that “fingerprint” and something is lost when the music is compressed into 1's and 0's, or what I refer to as “binary sound.”

Now, this phenomenon may be satisfactory to some and the CD certainly has its place as a musical format. In our throw away society, CD’s offer convenience and a method to play music that the vinyl record cannot offer. But “binary sound,” to me, is just too clear- you are missing important elements of the recorded sound, sounds that the artist who recorded the music wanted you to hear.

In our digitized world there are compelling arguments for whatever sound reproduction format a person chooses. But you will never take the vinyl lover out of me.

  • The Beatles Double Album Turns 40 By: Marvin J Markus - The Beatles had released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band & Magical Mystery Tour in 1967. Both had outlandish covers and a focus on psychedelic music. In 1968 The Beatles went the opposite direction with a plain white cover and a focus on variety in musical styles. While it's not as flawless as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Revolver (which I'd probably rank #2 and #3 among Beatles albums) I think it's incredible variety makes it the most interesting listen over the long term.

  • Gold Tips for WoW and Wrath of the Lich King By: Greg Mee - New talents, builds, gear, dungeons, raids, and monsters have arrived with Wrath of the Lich King, the new World of Warcraft expansion. The Lich King and his Death Knights are causing chaos. One thing that hasn't changed though, is what it takes to make gold. There are new things to gather, but the gathering professions haven't changed. Demand for green drops from mobs will probably be strong for awhile since much of it is better than the epic stuff people had at level 70.

  • Is a Learn Piano DVD Better Than a Private Teacher? By: Guy O Scott - Get both hands on the keyboard and work those pedals almost immediately with lessons from your Learn Piano DVD instructor. Let the fun begin! Don't get saddled into a structured learning process bogged down by the teacher's availability. Practice and play when the time is right for you. And, best of all, DVD lessons are in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Private instructors can put a lot of pressure on students. The clock is running and at the steep hourly rates, piano lessons become very expensive, very quickly.

  • Musician's Friend By: Joseph Vautour - The TV and film industry is a Musicians Friend because if you get even one song licensed for TV or Film you will be on your way to financial freedom. Your Music would be Heard All Over The World, NOT making money from what you're passionate about sucks! It leaves you feeling like you have no power in your life. Over time it can become very discouraging and can rob you of the passion and determination you need to succeed in this VERY competitive business.

  • Are You Psychic? Find Out With Parapsychology By: Craig Malone - Parapsychology is the study of supernatural events including esp, consciousness after death, and the ability to see through objects. The science can help you answer the question - am I psychic? It can help you whether or not you are clairvoyant and whether or not you have psychic ability. Parapsychology is often referred to as a pseudo science, even though it is studied by the military. Experiments conducted by parapsychologists have included the use of random number generators to test for evidence of being able to predict the future.

  • Celebrity Barber Horrors By: Kennedy Kennedy - When Movie Hair Goes Horribly, Horribly Wrong! Sometimes, a guy can find himself victimized by a barber who either doesn't have a clue - or has a sick sense of humor instead. Most of us have suffered through the indignity of the "Haircut from Hell." The good thing about it is: you wait it out; your hair grows out, and your grooming crisis passes. You, and everyone who had the good taste to point and laugh at you, will forget it ever happened.

  • Leveling and Wrath of the Lich King By: Greg Mee - World of Warcraft started out with a level cap of 60, which was increased to 70 with the Burning Crusade. BC brought with it a brand new continent (the Outlands,) new races, new dungeons to explore, and it quickly rendered much of the pre-BC, hard won gear, obsolete. And now comes the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. The Wrath of the Lich King expansion brings new gear (say bye bye to all the old purple gear,) the Lich King, Death Knights, and 10 new levels to earn.
