Where safety is concerned, never take unnecessarily risks. Many drivers underestimate the dangers of driving on an icy road. As a result, they continue to drive as per normal, and this results in accidents that endanger their own lives and others. To avoid potential accidents, you must first be aware of the dangers that are commonly associated with driving on an icy road.
First, understand that many drivers continue to drive in the same manner, despite different driving conditions. This can be due to inexperience, or to habit. Some drivers are simply so accustomed to their own style of driving that they find it hard to adapt when driving on icy roads. And this, may lead to fatal accidents.
The problem with driving on icy roads is that the friction between the road surface and the rubber tyres is greatly reduced. Often, a more experienced driver would be able to feel the difference immediately and make some necessary adjustments, which we will briefly discuss later in this article.
The slippery road surface makes the car more difficult to control. The braking distance becomes longer, and the car may skid occasionally.
The reduced friction is enough to cause numerous accidents on icy roads. There are a list of potential accidents just waiting to happen. Consider the following scenarios:
- Tail gating drivers may slam into the car in front as there is not enough braking distance.
- Skids may cause cars to go off the roads or collide with other cars or even stationary objects such as lamp posts.
- An animal or a person dashing across the road may be knocked down, due to a driver failing to respond in time.
But as you can see, the root cause of all the above scenarios is loss of control due to slippery conditions. Under better conditions, these accidents may not have happened.
The important thing to note here is that such accidents can be avoided just by making some minor adjustments to one's driving style.
For instance, a driver driving on icy roads can choose to:
- Give more space to the car in front so that if the car in front brakes suddenly, there is time for you to brake as well.
- Familiarize as much as you can with the operations of the car. When it comes to emergency, you need to know how to react fast!
- Slow down considerably when nearing a turn or a corner to avoid skidding.
- Knowing the roads well help you anticipate what is coming up next.
- Remain vigilant at all times, and never drive in adverse road conditions if you are tired.
All the above tips can help save your life.
Finally, if the road conditions really get too bad, make a conscious decision to stay off the roads. Your life is definitely more important than any business meeting or appointment that you may have for the day. If the weather doesn't permit you to be outdoors, simply stay indoors. Cancel all your appointments.
When you do that, you avoid all the dangers that may be lurking somewhere on the icy roads.
