Diabetes And You

By: Steve Wynler

Almost 800,000 cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. Those with diabetes are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and kidney failure. Diabetes is caused when the body does not process or use glucose, a type of sugar, properly. There are several different types of diabetes that affect the body differently.

While diabetes can have a tremendous affect on people, it can in many cases be controlled by use of modern medicine and improved personal habits. This includes things like proper exercise and following a healthy diet. Those who are able to keep their blood sugar at the proper levels are often able to reduce the risk of some of the complications associated with diabetes.

One common complication associated with diabetes is slower healing wounds. It takes much longer for a wound to heal and this can result in serious injury. Foot ulcers present a very large problem for those with diabetes; 1 in 6 people with diabetes will contract a foot ulcer. Foot ulcers are open sores that are in part caused by poor circulation. They are frequently found on the bottom of the foot in people with diabetes.

Among diabetics foot ulcers are the leading cause of below the waist amputations. If you are diabetic, it is very important to properly care for all wounds. It is also very important to schedule regular doctors' appointments and to ensure that an examination of the feet occurs. Appropriate care of the foot is essential and some people wear special socks which are designed to help control moisture, which can lead to ulcers. Diabetic socks also utilize wrinkle resistant fabrics and are seamless to help prevent blisters and other irritations. Special shoes are also available to help reduce the risk of ulcers.

In cases where an ulcer has formed, it is important to try to stay off of your feet as much as possible. Your doctor will likely prescribe antibiotics, clean the wound, and remove dead skin. X-rays may also be taken to ensure that the infection has not spread to the bone, and it may be necessary to keep the wound bandaged. In some cases, a lift chair may be of assistance. Lift chairs are recliners that have a raising base that makes it easier to stand or sit. They also generally feature a remote controlled back and leg rest which can be used to ensure that your foot stays elevated and no extra strain is placed on your foot. These chairs can promote better circulation through proper sitting positions, which is very important to those with diabetes. Some models also have built in massage, which also serves to increase circulation.

If you are diabetic then it is very important to try to prevent foot ulcers and other types of wounds. These can seem like nothing more than an inconvenience, but if left untreated can result in serious injury or even amputation. Pay attention to your feet most of all, but really it is important to be completely conscious of everything your body is telling you.
