Dog Food: Shop Wisely

By: Brigitte Smith

Canines have been companions for humans since the dawn of time. We need to return that loyalty and respect by offering high quality food that satisfies their nutritional needs. When you look down the shelves, do not simply buy the first brand of dog food you see. Put some effort into the process, read the labels and make an educated choice.

You'll have to decide whether you want your dog's diet to consist of wet food or dry food. Cans of wet dog food contain liquids which help keep your pet hydrated. The disadvantage of dry dog food is that it does not have these liquids, so to avoid dehydration, make sure your dog always has plenty of fresh water.

If you decide to stick with dry food there are many excellent options. There are natural foods, organic foods, and foods with low levels of preservatives. There are also foods that come with an ingredient commonly called brewers yeast, which in small quantities is a natural remedy for fleas. This will make your dog very happy.

One good option is sojos food. Of course you want your pet to be as healthy as possible, and you should seriously look into wellness pet food. Your dog's specific needs may also dictate the type of dog food you purchase. There are foods geared towards the needs of small dogs and there are foods made with the needs of large dogs in mind.

An important factor to consider is the age of your dog. Puppies tend to need a fat content that is higher in their diet because they are still in the process of growing and need to develop further. However, if you keep feeding your dog puppy food for a longer period of time, he will become overweight. This problem of obesity is a growing trend in dogs lately.

Older dogs also have a variety of nutritional food choices available. These products are designed to meet the changing needs of aging pets. Many older dogs suffer from hip problems or arthritis. Many of these foods have nutritional supplements like glucosamine which aids in reducing stiffness and soreness as well as promotes healthy joints.

Every living organism's body requires a similar source of energy to live; and this comes from food. Food molecules break down to provide the energy needed for metabolic processes. No wonder then that we should devote a major portion of our dog care efforts towards finalizing a holistic dog food regimen. Just like a human, your dog needs its necessary vitamins, minerals, protein, carbs, and other nutrition in its diet.

Just as with human food labeling, dog foods legally must list their ingredients, in order from the largest amount down to the smallest.
