Eyesight Correction: Vision Issues and Corrections

By: Suzanne Hughes

Problems regarding vision are really commonplace nowadays, but that's no reason to underestimate them. There are plenty of examples: there's the usual problem which most people face, that is, a blurriness of vision, and then there are halos, blind spots and also, floaters. Blurriness is caused when the eye loses its power to focus on small and sometimes minute details on objects. Blind spots are certain areas on the eye through which you can see nothing, and are thus, rendered blind in those 'spots'. These are also called scotomas.

These problems are pretty serious, and should only be checked and diagnosed by a qualified doctor or medical practitioner. Because more often than not, instead of being just another eye problem, these can suggest deeper ailments: side effects of problems that aren't just restricted to the eyes, such as diabetes.

But whatever the problem may be, it should be checked almost right then and there, with no delay because the slightest delay may prove costly when it comes to matters of the eye. One should go to a doctor and have a checkup at once if one feels his or her eyes are causing troubles. There are select professionals and medical practitioners skilled in various different aspects of eye ailments. So be aware of who these are.

There’s no single solution to vision problems, as they generally vary from person to person. As for example, people suffering from macular degeneration suffer from a sharp loss in central vision, and this is mainly because the macula, situated right behind the retina is responsible for the visual range. But macular degeneration doesn't hinder peripheral view of the eye. The solution to this problem is to magnify the field of vision of the eye for closer viewing, and the usage of minuscule microscopes for long distance vision.

For day to day activities like watching television, reading books and newspapers and engaging in delicate tasks like craft, central vision is crucial. And magnification works wonders in this regard. Depending on the sort of eye problem you have, you'll want to use different kinds of magnifiers. For example, those involved in sewing and knitting will not benefit from hand held magnifiers, and will be better of with certain glass lenses which are inserted into the eyeglass frames themselves, allowing for automatic better vision. Telescopic glasses are used for long distance vision, for watching movies and theater, and also driving. They may look like you average eyeglasses, but are actually very small telescopes attached right to the top of the lenses. The lenses depend on the prescription you've received. Just by tilting your head up and down, you can change your field of vision, similar to the bifocals.

Modern techniques have ensured that people need not be plagued by eyesight problems any longer. Earlier, people could not have imagined the leaps and bounds made in curing several eyesight problems; not only is your problem cured, or lessened to a large extent, you also look better than ever in the crowd, thanks to stylish eyeglasses.

Refractive laser eye surgery is one of the major techniques in eyesight correction. What it basically does is balance the components of our eye by making some required changes to the cornea, so that refraction is lessened and focusing is improved. Laser technology is becoming very commonplace, but doesn't help in every situation. People suffering from thick or irregular corneas will not benefit from laser surgery.
