Five Considerations When Buying A Vacuum

By: Dave Roth

There are many good ways to buy a vacuum cleaner, but there are also some things that should be looked for. Five areas are specifically important, and tips in those areas can keep someone from making a serious mistake and regretting a purchase of a vacuum. These areas are: price/brand, attachments, floor covering, motor size, and overall ease of use. Price is often the most important for many people, and the main thing to be sure of is whether a vacuum cleaner is within a person’s budget when it is purchased. This is very closely followed by the brand of cleaner that is being considered, because some people feel that they must buy a certain brand and nothing else will do. Buying something outside of one’s price range – or buying a brand that a person would not normally buy or is not familiar with -- is never a good idea, even if it has all of the features and attachments that are desired. The price and brand, though, are not the only things to be considered when looking around for a cleaning machine for a person’s home.

The next thing to look at is the attachments that a vacuum cleaner offers. These attachments are certainly more important to some people than to others, but it is always a good idea to be aware of what you are getting when you make a purchase. For people who have a lot of draperies and furniture that the vacuum will be used on, attachments are a lot more significant. These people would use the attachments much more than someone with different needs. However, what a person gets for his or her money can vary widely based on the brand, and attachments are no different. The kind of floor covering that the vacuum will be used on will also affect which cleaner a person should buy, and is another serious consideration. Canister vacuums are used for hardwood and tile floors, and they are also often used for floors that have expensive rugs. In addition, these vacuums are used for draperies and furniture, and because of that they are very important to a specific segment of the population. Most people, though, buy the upright models. These are used for wall to wall carpet, which is very common in many people’s houses today. They are not good for delicate upholstery, though, so attachments and floor covering style are areas that are often tied together.

The motor size is the next big consideration. Without having a motor that is powerful enough to do what the homeowner wants to do, a vacuum cleaner can soon become a big disappointment. Even the nicest brand of vacuum cleaner with all of the attachments that a person might want will not be a good investment if it does not get the carpet clean. Motors that are too small can also be overworked and wear out easily, which is another good way to upset the person who has just bought the vacuum. The overall ease of use is the last thing to consider. Vacuum cleaners that are too heavy, bulky, or cumbersome for a person are not going to be enjoyed. These kinds of problems can plague people who do not spend the time to investigate vacuum options and make sure that they get what they want.
