Gain Traction for Your Website with Webmaster Content

By: Chris Robertson

No one knows exactly how many websites and web pages there are on the Internet. Some experts estimate that there are over 2 billion websites, while others indicate that there are over 8 billion web pages. Whatever the numbers, it's clear that the Web is a competitive place where websites can easily get lost in the shuffle.

Generating Revenue

What does this mean for webmasters? Almost all websites are designed to generate revenue, either through the sales of products and services; through revenue streams like Google AdSense, affiliate links; or in the case of nonprofits, through increased memberships and donations. As a webmaster, it becomes a numbers game. The more traffic you have to your website, the more revenue you will generate. Your challenge, then, is to find ways to increase traffic to your website.

Weaknesses of Search Engines

All the talk of search engine optimization belies an underlying issue: search engines work best when people know exactly what they seek. If they are looking for a brand name product, it's easy to enter that term into the search box and receive relevant results. The same goes for the name of a website or a store. But search engines are anything but optimal when the seekers don't know exactly what they are looking for. After all, Web users aren't psychic, so they may not know what keywords to use to find what they need. For webmasters trying to increase traffic, this means using tried and true methods for raising search engine rankings so that both exact and approximate searches will return your site on the first or second page of results.

Webmaster Content Reigns Supreme

While a number of Internet marketing strategies can help drive traffic to your website and increase your search engine ranking, the most effective tool is also the most straightforward: web site content. Search engines love web site content. They particularly like a site that changes over time by consistently adding new web site content. The type of content for web sites that search engines most love is that which is relevant to the purposes of the site.

Finding Databases of Content

Although search engines love web site content, webmasters often find it difficult or prohibitively expensive to create new, meaningful content for their websites. That's where databases of content come in handy. You can inexpensively purchase a number of databases of content that is relevant to your website. For example, if you have a cooking-related website, there are recipes databases, drink databases, and vegetarian recipes databases that can provide you will tens of thousands of recipes - enough for you to consistently add content to your site for well over a year. Similarly, purchasing the rights to use an articles database can provide you with thousands of keyword rich articles that you can use on your site. There are databases of song lyrics, restaurants, RSS feeds, ezines, quotations, as well as many other types of content.

Webmaster resources like these are abundant - you simply need to know where to look. Once you have a solid foundation of webmaster content, and regularly incorporate relevant content into your site, you are sure to see your site rise up in search engine rankings and your traffic (and sales!) increase.
