Global Warming Topics

By: Sarah BB

The past 100 years has seen the Earths surface warm up approximately 0.6°C. Over these 100 years there has been a massive increase in man made greenhouse gasses, mainly down to the effects of burning fossil fuels and the depletion of forest and woodland. These are not the only two topics in the Global Warming debate, as there are many other topics that affect Global Warming and contribute to climate change.

· Carbon Dioxide

· CFCs

· Deforestation

· Emissions

· Fossil Fuels

All of these and many more have an impact to our environment and in turn attribute to Global Warming.

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide, aka CO2 is a colourless and odourless gas made up of two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom. CO2 is produced when carbon is burned in an excess of oxygen. E.G. it is released into the atmosphere during natural forest fires and the man-made combustion of fossil fuels. CO2 can be found in other natural sources like volcanic eruptions, decay of dead organic matter (Plants and Animals ETC), evaporation from the oceans and breathing. Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere by carbon dioxide absorbers, known as "sinks". The main removal of Carbon dioxide from our atmosphere is absorption by seawater, photosynthesis by ocean-dwelling plankton and land-dwelling plantation, including forests and grasslands.

CFCs

Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs as they are more commonly known are all man-made and do occur naturally. CFCs started to be utilised in the 1930s where they were used in aerosols, foam manufacture, air conditioning and refrigeration. CFCs are a far stronger greenhouse gas than CO2, and they damage the stratospheric ozone. The Montreal Protocol in 1987 helped in the phasing out CFCs emissions in an attempt to protect the ozone layer, but because of the long atmospheric lifetimes CFCs have they will continue to influence the greenhouse effect for many years.

Deforestation

The world’s forests cover approximately a quarter to a third of the total land surface of the Earth. The reduction in area of this valuable environmental, social and economic resource through deforestation has the potential to cause problems on a global scale. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for photosynthesis, and help to regulate the natural greenhouse effect. Deforestation takes away a potential consumer for the carbon dioxide mankind is pumping into the atmosphere. In addition, if forests are removed by burning, a lot of extra carbon dioxide locked up in tree wood is returned to the atmosphere.

Emissions

Greenhouse gases are emissions in the atmosphere that occur naturally, released by natural sources. These gasses are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. The last 200 years has seen a dramatic rise of these greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere by man-made substances. These additional emissions are increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere above their natural limits, enhancing the natural greenhouse effect that is believed to be causing global warming.

Fossil Fuels

Power that everybody uses is created by the burning of fossil fuels, weather it be conventional power stations that burn coal, oil or gas to produce electricity. Road vehicles burn fossil fuel in the form of petrol or diesel, these are fuels refined from oil. The above called fossil fuels because of the way they are formed. It takes millions of years of decay to produce these fuels. Fossil fuels are made by the burial and compaction of rotting vegetation on land (coal), and marine organisms on the sea floor (oil and gas). Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, that enhances the greenhouse effect.

As you can see these are just some of the major contributors to Global Warming. There are many other topics as subheadings under each of these that play an equal part in contribution to our Climate Change. It is in these sub headings that we as individuals can make a difference in.

  • Natural Gas Prices in 2010 By: Vernon Trollinger - Natural Gas Powers Texas According to the US Dept. of Energy, Texas produces and consumes more electricity than any other state. Over half of Texas’ energy comes from natural gas-powered generation plants. Texas produces 25% of the nation’s natural gas and is the largest producer; storing and supplying natural gas via pipeline for all regions of the country. Yet while Texas has large reserves of low grade coal, most of what is burned in its coal-fired plants is brought in via train from Wyoming and Montana.

  • Landform Destruction is Worse Than Global Warming By: Melissa Olmst - Many of you have read or seen in the news how a lot of the global warming gurus have been skewing climate records to make global warming seem like it is real. People have fallen for it for over 30 years while people have made billions off the lies. The mainstream media still does not like to talk about this as a possible fraud case. It also seems the governments do not know what to believe.

  • Wave Generators- Power From the Sea By: Gregory Colvin - Anyone who has played in the ocean surf or experienced the current of a river, felt the tug of outgoing or incoming surf, recognizes that there is energy contained in moving bodies of water. Harnessing that energy to create electricity has been in third position, behind solar and wind, as a source of alternative energy. But now, advances in technology are changing that situation. Commercially viable prototypes and active production models operating in wave farms are currently producing electricity successfully.

  • Haiti Earthquake Reveals World's Compassion By: Todd A. Smith - At the dawn of this new decade, I asked readers of Regal Magazine to make New Year’s resolutions to have a positive impact on the lives of others, and not focus on selfish desires in 2010. Shortly after the publication of that editorial, the town of Port-au-Prince, Haiti was struck with an earthquake and aftershock of catastrophic proportions, killing hundreds of thousands of Haitians, orphaning children and practically forcing an entire city into homelessness. The Haiti earthquake touched all of our hearts and reminded us just how precious life can be.

  • Alternative Energies By: John Harley - Alternative Energy is important item of discussion on just about anyone’s mind today. It was only a year ago that half the population could stand up and say that they don’t care as long as their car can get from A to B without a hassles, but as recent events continue to unfold, more and more people are now standing up against the use of fossil fuels if not for anything other than the fact that they can no longer even afford to drive their vehicle anywhere.

  • How the Current Economy Has Changed Consumer Behaviors By: Rachel Bonsignore - Since the economy began its downward spiral into recession in early 2008, we have seen changes in consumer behaviors and habits. Studies have shown that mindsets have shifted and that the current consumer is a very different person than the consumer of several years ago. Many marketing research services have begun to create their own surveys and reports to gain insight into this new consumer that we are dealing with today.

  • End Of The World In 2012 ? Breaking Open The Head... By: Phil Johnson - Maybe, the real outcome lies somewhere in between the 2 extremes. The mythology behind the 2012 enigma focuses on the ancient Mayan Long Count Calendar that was a Mesoamerican calendrical system that mysteriously ends on December twenty one, 2012. Interestingly enough, that date conjointly coincides with the winter solstice. This date more corresponds with a predicted "galactic alignment" that is believed to occur when our solar system passes directly through the Galactic Equator.
