Keeping Your Suit In It's Prime

By: Mina Shafiei

An hand-made suit from a Beverly Hills or Los Angeles tailor is something that every respectable man should have in his wardrobe. Having even just one power suit for prominent and important occasions will help a man give off an aura of authority and respect that no other piece of clothing will ever match. That's a fact.

Another fact is that even the best thousand-dollar suit from a professional Beverly Hills tailor will be totally screwed up with just even one tear, one stain, or one ill-fitting proportion. You absolutely have to learn how to take care of your suit if you want it to last a lifetime.

Here's what you've got to watch out for:

- Snags are the bane of any article of clothing; especially high-class and expensive ones. When you're wearing your suit, be very conscious of your surroundings. Even as something as innocent as slightly brushing your arm against a low-laying shrub or a concrete can be enough to seriously ruin your suit's threads.

- Moths are yet another bane of clothing, moth larvae are notoriously destructive little pests that love munching on anything in your closet. Holes in your Beverly Hills tailored suit sure won't do much for your image as well.

You have the traditional method of handling these pests: poisons and mothballs. But if you don't want your suit to irritate your skin and smell like weird medicine, stick to cedar hangers and closets. Cedar may give a sweet smell off to us, but to moths, it is repulsive and will keep them away from your clothes. Just make sure to sandpaper the wood once in a while, as the scent fades with age and exposure.

- Wrinkles: Not even the vaunted Los Angeles tailors have found material that will never get wrinkles. Always, always, hang your suits... until the day comes that we are totally wrinkle-free.

Even if you have to travel with one in hand, don't cram your suit in a suitcase. Get a garment bag that you can store your suit in when you travel, it may be inconvenient, but just carry it around with you.

- Stains: You must clean any kind of stain on your suit. The longer you let it sit, the more permanent it becomes, so get your suit to the cleaners as soon as possible. Although it may seem like a no-brainer, ironing or pressing a suit with a stain on it will just bake it and make it a permanent scar on your thousand-dollar, custom-made power suit. The suit you picked up from your local well-known Los Angeles Tailor. So, don't iron a stained suit.

- Measurements: Your body changes over time, even in just a matter of months. Always keep a record of your measurements, and how your suit looks when you wear it. The worst thing that can happen to you is for you to put on your suit and notice that it doesn't complement your body... especially when you need it to.

If you find that your measurements or bodily proportions have changed even slightly, seek a professional tailor who can make alterations on your suit. Keeping the proportions in check will make sure that your suit serves its purpose for you.
