Sclerotherapy: How It May Help You

By: Elisa Cruz

For many individuals, unsightly veins on various parts of the body are a way of life. Pain, heaviness, and self-consciousness related to their appearance is common but there are many therapies out there which medical technology have made available. Currently much progress has been made to alleviate pain associated with spider and varicose veins.

One popular vein removal treatment is sclerotherapy which is an injection therapy that irritates the vein wall causing it to collapse. Usually more than one treatment is needed, about 2-4 but in milder cases only 1-2 may be necessary. Each treatment is usually done at monthly intervals and minimal discomfort may occur afterward. Usually a compressive sock can be worn around the legs to keep the skin held tight around the treatment areas. Sclerotherapy as a treatment is safe and generally provides great results. It is important to remember that vein treatments will seal vessels but that varicose veins and spider veins can recur, especially in those with a disposition to them.

Since no anesthesia and no incisions are needed, many feel that the sclerotherapy is a great option for the treatment of veins. The solutions used during treatments all depend on the particular case, the size of the veins to be removed, and the necessary treatment to remove them. Patients usually notice improvement shortly after treatments and even more so after several weeks. By waiting to see how the veins are healing and disappearing, the patient and vein treatment doctor can tell when and if more treatments are necessary.

It is important to be fully aware of the benefits and risks that are associated with any treatment and with sclerotherapy, there is no difference. It is a good idea to get an idea of what to expect and to ask questions so that you are fully informed of what the procedure entails and how it will affect your health and wellbeing. Sclerotherapy is generally considered an elective and cosmetic procedure so most major health insurance providers may not cover treatments. Prices for treatments vary from clinic to clinic. Discussing the financial commitment associated with treatments is obviously a great idea to make sure that you are fully aware of what you are looking at cost wise.

Since sclerotherapy generally takes about 30-60 minutes, it is convenient to have treatments performed at virtually anytime. Since sclerotherapy is outpatient and no anesthesia is used, you can be sure that you will be back on your feet and back to your everyday regular activities in no time. Sclerotherapy is most effective on the legs and is not usually safely performed in other areas. It is therefore important to understand how sclerotherapy works and how it can affect the body. Removing spider veins does not affect the body in a negative way and they are not functioning veins. Though allergic reactions to the treatments are rare, it is always a good idea to be fully aware of how your body may be affected by the treatment and what symptoms may occur.
