Supply chain management

When you say supply chain, you think about an entire network of specialists, including suppliers, factory workers, warehouse managers, people working for distribution centers and retailers, plus customers. They all take part in the production process starting from raw materials to the finished goods. Supply chain management covers all these aspects, people and the activities involved. From sourcing to procurement of materials and supplies, from transition and transportation, supply chain management is planning. All these activities and processes are subjected to it.

As there are so many people involved in the supply chain (already mentioned above), it’s only natural that supply chain management also involves collaboration between them. There are many aspects to be considered where supply chain management is involved, including the one related to supply and demand. What are the exact areas supply chain management is active in? Are there any specific problems this process should address? Let’s see.

Without doubt, we can all understand that supply chain is like a big network, formed by various providers, suppliers, retailers and other specialists. Supply chain management has to deal with configuring the distribution of this big number. Thus, suppliers must be determined along with their location, production facilities must be identified and distribution centers clearly settled. Supply chain management also has to deal with warehouses and even with customers.

Is the delivery scheme one of the key problems addressed through supply chain management? The answer is affirmative. When it comes to direct shipment, cross docking and/or direct store delivery, supply chain management is responsible of handling all the problems that appear along the way. The same thing goes for all difficulties related to distribution, including operating control, transportation mode (three big options: ocean freight, air freight and motor carrier) and the control of this transportation.

In order for the supply chain to remain efficient, all the parties involved need to be in contact. Supply chain management is also responsible for information integration, helping to the communication of essential data, regarding inventory processes, transportation mode and additional control, plus collaboration (between suppliers, intermediaries, service providers).

We have mentioned the word inventory, another aspect involved with supply chain management. Raw materials inventory is essential, the specialist needing to determine both their available quantity and location. Inventory management is also done for work-in process and finished goods. Last but not least, supply chain management deals with payments and funds exchange to and from various parties involved in the supply chain.

There are many strategies involved with supply chain management, depending on several factors. The truth is that all organizations need a supply chain that is highly effective and thus, supply chain management becomes essential.
