The History of Anime

Many people watch Anime with such great classics as Ghost in a Shell, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z, but you may be asking, what is the history of what many recognize as the next level of animation? The history of anime began at the start of the 20th century when filmmakers from Japan worked with animation that was being developed in Germany, United States, Russia, and France. According to records in 1917, the two minute clip of a samurai trying to test a new sword is the first clip of anime in existence.

Because of low budgets, by the 1930s the live action Japanese movie industry was strained and considered to be underdeveloped. Location and casting restrictions were also another issue along with the worry of not having Western actors and actresses. Animation allowed for many different settings, the pushing of the imagination with fantasy like sceneries.

Disneys success with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released in 1937 was a huge influence on directors in Japan who had now learned techniques to lower the cost and frames used in production of the Anime.

During the 70s there was a huge growth with Manga whose popularity lead into later animation. Osamu Tezuka was one of the most well known animators and was really considered a legend and god of manga, but his work was not only his work that was influential. Work of the other hard working animators inspired characteristics and elements of anime today. The giant Mecha genre, which is a robot inspired animation. By the 1980s Robot anime like Macross and Gundam took center stage in animation and created the boom in production and the successful adaptations of anime in overseas markets in the 1980s. It gained more momentum in the American and Australian markets into the 1990s and 2000s.

The English term animation in Japanese is written out as katakana. Anime came about in the 1970s. While both terms are used in Japanese the short version is used far more often.

The visual characteristics of an Anime character has lead to Anime being widely considered its own art form away from just regular animation as a visual medium. Many styles in Anime have become fairly common even as far as becoming a standard; this is considered Anime Style. Generally, the most common form of anime drawings are the features like the large eyes, big hair, and longer limbs which all are slightly exaggerated to a degree. The Anime style has included dramatic speech bubbles and speed lines for years.

Japanese calligraphy and Japanese paintings are also an influence in the anime style.
