The Science Of Reading While Walking

By: Abderisak.G Adam

There are some very pragmatic skills out there that the common man doesn't know of, among these techniques we find the ability to walk while reading. Most people usually associate reading with sitting down in a nice little corner, being bothered by no one. Although that is the ideal way to read books one enjoy, sometimes you don't have any other option but to read while walking. It is therefor immensely important that you learn this technique as soon as possible, who knows? You might find it to be of great help one day.

Before I begin to describe to you how you “walk reading” can be done in an efficient way, I'd like to issue a small warning for some potential danger. As common knowledge tells us, reading while walking demands some level of mental participation for it to work, that is to say, you can loose focus on what might be ahead of you on the street. I would therefor recommend you do not try this out on busy streets or any other place of danger. Having that said, here's how you can do it:

Pick up the document (book, magazine, etc) that you want to read, the bigger (font) it is, the better. It would be great if you could make another copy of the document that is larger so it becomes easier to read and digest. The general rule is; the bigger the writing > the safer it becomes to read. You want to start training indoors, this will make you better prepared when (and if) you go outside. It doesn't necessarily be in your home, it could be anything from the library to a local store.

O.K now it's time to start the reading process. Try holding the document with one or two hands (try both methods to find out what suits you the best) then simply start walking. Also, try to refrain from covering your face with the material, doing this will increase the risk of hitting a potential object. It's thus better to hold it in the area around your chest while occasionally looking up to see where you are walking and if there are any potential objects in your path. Instead of always looking directly towards coming objects, try to see the shadow of the objects, this will enable you to see anticipate must objects without having to remove the book. Remember, mastering this takes time and it's therefor very recommended to start out slowly. Walk slowly in the beginning to get a grip of how it is, only when you feel secure in a slow paste could you try to (gradually) raise your walking speed.

One of the keys to becoming good on this is to use your peripheral vision as much as possible, the peripheral vision being the part of your vision that occurs outside of the very center of your gaze.

If you practice enough, you might be able to use the full potential of your peripheral vision and navigate by the visual area around the book, instead of having to remove your concentration fully by constantly looking up.
