Website Traffic - The Key To Success

By: Mike Leinweber

Driving website traffic is of utmost importance to the thousands of entrepreneurs all over the internet today. A count of the traffic hits on a website is a good indicator of the health and success of the site. Here are some suggestions on how to drive traffic like the pros.

The key benefit of high traffic to your site is a dramatic increase in the earning power of your site. More traffic leads to a higher likelihood of both adding more subscribers and an increase in the amount of ad clicks. High traffic transforms what may have started out as a fun experiment into a lucrative business.

While there is no secret formula used to increase web traffic, some failed methods that have been used with little success include: adding hallucinating graphics to your site, spamming potential site visitors with your site's URL sent via email, and other shady practices. However, if you really want to drive website traffic to your site, there are three questions that every owner/operator should ask.

Utility. What's the site for and do enough people care? Personal blogs and retail sites often languish because they lack content that's relevant to most web surfers. There's only so many sites a person can visit in the few or several hours he or she is online a day. Why should this particular site be in their 'favorites' list, or even a stop along their daily URL rounds?

Most people are interested in entertainment. They will stop dead in their tracks for a good laugh or an interesting story/picture/illustration. Most commonly, people love to be entertained at work, because it breaks the monotony. Circulating your URL around the office will increase website traffic. This way you'll gain more regular visitors in collective groups.

Competence. Do you realize what you're doing? There aren't enough folks out there who pay attention to their lives so that they would care to plan. They just go through with the tide, and this is exactly the same with amateur site operators too. Is there enough stuff in your site that is interesting and different to satisfy 20-somethings? This generation of surfers are looking for sites that have all feeds and links within a professionally maintained Web 2.0 site. No corny wallpaper or jumping .gif stuff.

Kids in high school are constantly worried about how they look. If you want to regularly draw these eyes to your site, you must amuse them while delivering some purpose. MySpace and its ilk are very popular, so be sure to use that knowledge to your advantage.

Finally for the older crowd which remembers, and perhaps is even nostalgic for, Web 1.0 era sites, keeping things plain, simple and honest will keep them loyal. While their kids will just click elsewhere and never come back, this crowd would rather complain about errors and broken links.
