What is Pornography?

By: Kelly Renaul

We all watch it; we all read it, and heck we even sometimes just listen to it! This article discusses everything you need to know about pornography.

Pornography, also known as porn, is the depiction of events and situations with the purpose of sexually arousing the viewer. This is achieved by having acts of sexual exploration of fetishes and desires of the viewers and because of this the marketing for porn is very large. So much so that over the last few decades the VCR, DVD, and in the last 10 years the internet, have created an emerging market which has made our culture more tolerant in mainstream media and the erotic sexual portrayals in adult material. Performers in pornography are referred to as Porn Stars and are generally considered to focus solely on the adult film industry.

You can find many different pornography media types: video, film, sound recording, anime porn, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, and even video games as of late. One thing to keep in mind, live shows where sexual acts take place are considered sex shows and stripteases.

In many countries, legally and culturally there are laws that stop the production and sales of the nude art form.

Something kind of interesting is that the word derives from the Greek word porne or prostitute and grapho, which means to write a record, and the suffix meaning property. Once you put the translation together in English it reads as a place to record prostitutes.

Sexual acts being depicted in a recorded format is as old as civilization, painted on buildings and built into art pieces like an oil lamp. It wasn t until the Victorian era that the concept of pornography that we have today was created. The Victorians determined that porn should only be viewed by a select few and that teaching young adults this behavior was a hazard to there spiritual growth. This is comparable to modern day pornography where laws stop youth from being able to view such adult content.

Taking a step forward we should address the economics of the industry. Revenues of the adult film industry in the United States since the 70s have been in the millions. In 1998, Forrester Research published a report that online adult content was estimated at a near 750 million dollars, since then the industry has grown to an 8 billion dollar market.

The porn industry has been the leader in our cultures growth of format awards in media choosing the VHS over the Betamax and the Blu Ray vs the HD DVD.

Pornography continues to pave a path for the future of our worlds growth with recorded history and an enriched financial contribution.
