When Directory Submission Services Turn Bad

By: Markus Skupeika

After a 6-month heap of testing I cam to find that directory submission services were not helping to improve search engine rankings. They were costing me a lot of money and I could not figure it out. Well, I do not want to bash all the services. Let me explain what I found from this period of rigid testing.

Directories can be quite a boost to receive better search engine rankings. They really can make quite the difference in setting up the foundation of your site. Actually, this is the first part of our search engine optimization package. In order to improve search engine rank you need to focus on links. But these links will need to be quality links to make any difference in improving your search engine rankings. You will need to be familiar with Latent Semantic Indexing to get ahead and improve search engine rank the correct way for the long term.

To stay away from the technical aspects in order to gain better rankings from directory submission services you really need to understand what is going on with directories.

Just like any other sites, directory sites will need to be optimized correctly so your submission will benefit. I found this the hard way. Actually very hard, what I found was directories were sticking my sites on pages that were not being crawled by Google. This was because they were to deep and the site was not structured correctly. Can you believe that, a directory site who was charging me and was not giving me any benefit? This happens a lot, this is why it really is important to use a correct directory submission list. This submission list must be compiled of sites that are worth your money or time to improve search engine rank. Even more important was I found directory submission services charging to place sites in garbage sites.

When I say garbage sites I also mean the techniques, which the submission companies were submitting links. They were promising that sites would improve search engine rank, but what they did not say that it takes time and where they were submitting the sites.

Boy was it a surprise to me after discovering after six months that submission services were killing my ranking. They actually were hurting the rankings because they were also using software to blow up links to harmful directories. This method was exposed in analytics and documented. Upon doing more research, I found that some directories were using no follow tags to improve their page rankings. This is simply wrong when a submission site asks you to submit to the directory and actually is using no follow tags.

What a no follow tag does is prevent the page rank to be passed to your web site. So the link is looked at as useless. Actually the link would be better off not on the page. Imagine taking hours of time and finding this out. Well, the good news is we found some very interesting sites and documented them. Actually no submission service in our opinion has the sites that I collaborated. Be sure when submitting to directory submission services do the research and get the best bang for your buck.
