Who Should Run a Background Check?

By: Simon Skinner

It is quite a scary thought that a total stranger can find out personal information about you with the click of a mouse. By running a background check on you, another person can find out the location of every address you have ever lived, if you have any small claims court judgments or other judgments against you, driving violations, bad credit, and of course a criminal history.

A background check is simply a method of obtaining important records on the details of a person’s life. These records are all on paper and can be obtained from government offices. However, with the world wide web, it is possible to tap into these files in order to find out the information that we need to know about a person. It is not illegal to do a background check and it is normal no matter what you situation is.

It is common knowledge that every person should conduct a background check on someone, for safety reasons and security. People are also advised to run background checks on themselves. This is due to the fact that it is very common for a person to find out that false information has been recorded about them. If they do not get the information corrected then it could hurt a number of important factors in their life, such as their job or future living situations.

Not everyone has false information on their background checks. Usually if you are running a background check on someone and the information is pretty bad you should still believe it until proven otherwise. As stated earlier, it is important for everyone to run a background check, but for who is it absolutely necessary?

Landlords

If you are planning on renting an apartment or house, you are usually required to fill out an application. Much of this is so that the landlord can use the information to conduct a background check on you. Most landlords make this clear to future tenants that there will be a criminal background check and a credit check processed prior to approval.

While it may seem like the landlord is trying to find out any bad information that they can to make sure that you cannot rent from them, they are really just protecting themselves. Most dwellings have a strict policy against a negative criminal background, and the credit leeway depends on the company.

Employers

During most employment interviews, the goal of the person being interviewed is to sell themselves the best that they can and speak of their achievements. The only downside is that the employer knows that the person is simply giving them the positive side of their lives and is not including other information.

The background check helps the employer find out for certain if the information that the person listed on the resume is accurate. The records also tell the employer if the applicant has any previous history of theft or a criminal background. Often times, an employer will conduct a credit check as well.

Debt Collectors

If you have a delinquent credit account it typically goes to a debt collection agency. Most of these agencies will run a background check on each person prior to making any type of offer. This just lets the debt collector know about the person’s previous credit history and if they already have any small claims against them with another credit agency.

Background checks are a valuable tool to have, even though most of the time you are the one who is having the check done on them. You can always check your own background records online through a company, and it is best to use a federal endorsed site so that you know that it is legit. Always run a background check on anyone that is new in your life and you are not sure if they are safe.
