Why not smoke?

By: Mira Williams

The second issue in kicking the habit is: “keep thinking positive”. If you really are determined to give up, keep reading!

Both cigar and cigarettes smokers expose themselves knowingly to the adverse effects of nicotine. The body has an immune system that is overridden so that toxic fumes can be inhaled, which is necessary to deliver nicotine into the bloodstream and ultimately to the brain. Although highly addictive, nicotine is less harmful than other substances contained in tobacco products. Those are toxic chemicals that harm our bodies and threaten our health, such as Ethanol, Aluminum, DDT, Ammonia, Arsenic, Formaldehyde, Benzene, Hydrogen cyanide and Carbon monoxide. In fact, the smoke from a single cigarette contains a mix of over 4000 chemicals. Out of those 4004, 50 are known carcinogens which are created when the tobacco is being burned.

If you make an attempt to find out what the dangers are of smoking, the internet really is your best source. You will find for instance that smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer (lungs, oral cavity, larynx and esophagus). You will also find that there are significant cosmetic benefits to giving up smoking. Heavy long-term smokers show this in their faces: a pallored skin and withdrawn grayish features gives it away. In addition to being addictive, nicotine stains fingers and teeth, giving them a yellowish brown tint. All this information about smoking is freely available on the Internet, mainly because smoking is increasingly seen as a scourge. It can be very rewarding to consult internet data on smoking and smoking related diseases, if you are embarking on a quest to give up smoking cigarettes.

If you want to stop smoking now, you should know what happens in your body. The primary substance around smoking is nicotine. Through regular smoking, nicotine is slowly absorbed through the skin, through the inner mucosa of the mouth and nose, and directly into the lungs through inhalation.

Over time, other substances inhaled through cigarette smoke, such as tar as well as a host of carcinogens, will fill your lungs and kill vital respiratory cells. You will find it harder to breathe as your respiratory capacity will decrease.

Are you really prepared to give up so many things in order to smoke? The answer should of course be negative. If you are not prepared to put up with allowing so many toxic substances to enter your body in order to fees your brain’s nicotine habit, then you need to quit smoking, thus offering your brain the opportunity to get weaned off nicotine. The urge to smoke frequently is caused by the effects of the nicotine leaving the body about 45 minutes after the last cigarette. That is why the cigarette manufacturers create packets of 20, so you can smoke exactly 20 cigarettes per day. The tobacco manufacturers and their share holders make money out of your addiction. They get rich while you die, which is rather unfair, don’t you think? The more you smoke, the more money they make. They would only regret your death as a result of smoking, because they cannot extract any more money from you. The tobacco manufacturers claim that you have a free choice to smoke or not to smoke. Unfortunately it usually means that the choice is not yours but theirs as they cleverly create a product that contains a highly addictive substance which takes the free will out of smoking.

My question is, why on earth would you trouble yourself all day long with such a filthy habit? Why not get help to quit, as this is one important step that you can take to improve your life and health in the long term.

The best way to stop smoking is to be determined. The moment you really quit, is an important step into choosing life instead of being slowly poisoned. Normally within a few days you will start to see the effects. Your lungs start to clear slowly and you find that your senses of smell and taste have improved. Within 72 hours, all nicotine will have left the body and the brain has stopped craving for it. Over time, yours respiratory capacity will increase, depending on how bad the damage was when you gave up. In order to have a substitute for cigarettes, people often start eating sweets or just increase their food intake in general, so that weight gain occurs. It is, however, easier to shed a few pounds than to give up cigarettes again. There are many other things that matter in this life, so think about them and then think about smoking. I can almost hear you think: perhaps now is the time to give it up for good?
