  • Hello From Austria – Classical Music, Hiking & Summer Tobogganing & Two Delicious Backyard Feasts I - After just a gorgeous day on the Alpine peaks at the Austrian / Italian / Slovenian border, the weather gods were not as kind yesterday. It rained and drizzled pretty much the whole day and I spent a relaxing day in my home town, visiting with friends and doing errands. The big excitement was reserved for the evening: a live concert at the Kunsthaus Weiz, a recently constructed multi-purpose performance venue. My sister-in-law Anneliese and I got ready for an evening of classical music that would feature works by Mozart, Strauss and Verdi. Just before 7:30 pm we strolled into the concert hall and were just able to find two separate seats in a packed venue. Many local dignitaries were present, and this was an important event in Weiz’ social calendar.
  • Hello From Ontario - A Southern Ontario Tour: Creemore, Collingwood And Orillia - Late spring is the perfect time for a driving tour, so yesterday my co-workers Vanessa, Khurram and I set off to check out the countryside around Toronto. Neither one of my co-explorers has lived in Canada for very long, so they haven’t really had a chance to discover areas outside the Big Smoke. So this was their first opportunity to venture forth into the hinterland that surrounds our big city. After leaving the 16-lane frenzy of Highway 401 and a brief ride on the 410 we drove into Ontario’s countryside north of Brampton. The landscape started to open up - farms, fields and forest started to appear.
  • Hello From Cuba (12) - Etecsa Telecommunications Building, Downtown Havana, Thursday, April 13, 2005, 3:32 pm I really gotta hurry, I only have about 28 minutes left on my Internet card so I am going to try to be brief here. The last few days have been extremely interesting. I am not a political expert, but in a city like Havana you can´t help but be confronted with politics. Everywhere you see billboards with political slogans, monuments of heroes that were significant in Cuba´s history, pictures of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, and the Cuban Revolution as well as the present economic circumstances are omnipresent topics of conversation.
  • Make Self-care a Top Priority to Manage Your Stress Says Philadelphia Life Coach - Jennifer loves her job. But when work demands threatened to wreck her marriage and her health she came to me for coaching. Ambitious and hard working, she prided herself on arriving at work early, leaving late and working through lunch. Her husband had enough when a get-away weekend had to be cancelled for the second time due to a last minute crisis at work. The stress of her job was taking a toll on her health, too. Jennifer's doctor suggested she go on blood pressure medication, which she wanted to avoid if at all possible. People like Jennifer are high achievers. They get things done. When busy become busier, however, life balance can suffer.
  • Hello From The Kawarthas - Early Fall Colours, Scarecrows & Frogmen - Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons in Ontario when forests light up in hues of yellow, orange and red. It's the perfect time for drives in the countryside, to visit small villages, check out farmer's markets, attend country fairs. We've had a long hot summer this year, even as I write this we are expecting temperatures 10 degrees Celsius above average. As a result the fall colour season is a little delayed, but that did not change the fact that it was time for a country driving tour. During the Servas conference in Vancouver I made a great connection, I met a fellow Ontarian, a lady in her 50s by the name of Julie who lives north of Peterborough in Ontario's Lake Country.

  • Menopause During The Holidays - Why “Wine” About It? - So, here we are again. The holiday season is upon us and we have preparations to make. One would think we’d get better at getting ready for them each year, but we don’t. You’ve gone shopping to purchase that special dress or stylish pantsuit for those special occasions, like the arrival of your friends and relatives or the office party. You’ve been to the grocery store to meander through the aisles noticing the holiday recipes displayed throughout, and buying things you only seem to require at this time of year; the candy sprinkles for cookies, sweet potatoes, breaded stuffing, cranberries and the like. Then too, there are the favorite beverages that are included.
  • Greenhorn Ranch will give you a healthier heart - Some of California's most beautiful and least developed countryside can be found in Plumas County, about an hour's drive west from Reno – which just happens to be where we found a real-life version of the movie "City Slickers" at Greenhorn Creek Guest Ranch. Sometimes you just know when you've come home. Within about 30 minutes of our arrival at Greenhorn, we were chowing down on their Friday night barbecue of scrumptious, fall-off-the-bone ribs with all the fixin's. The owners of the ranch, Trish and Ralph Wilburn, were strumming their guitars and singing western songs by the campfire.
  • Hello From Austria: Medieval History Up Close At The Riegersburg Fortress And Explorations Of Styria’s Volcano Region II - We were planning to see the other exhibition: “Legendary Riegersburg – Legendary Women”. Two very colourful female characters are associated with the history of this fortress. The first one was Baroness Elisabeth Katharina von Galler (1607 to 1672) who was the lady of the castle from 1648 to 1672. In a time of very traditional male-female role expectations the “Galllerin” was a very unconventional character and strayed from the usual norms. Women, even aristocratic women, were not allowed to own property at the time, and Elisabeth, as the sole heiress of the fortress, would have had to relinquish any property ownership to her husband, but she refused to comply. Even in her prenuptial agreement she ensured the right to decide over her property herself.
  • Ignite The Night: A Night At The Zero Gravity Circus Benefits Street Kids In Peru - "Tonight a dream has come true", said G.A.P Adventures CEO and founder Bruce Poon Tip. About a year ago he and a few of his team members at the Planeterra Foundation, G.A.P’s non-profit organization, sat together and brainstormed about a big fundraising event until someone said “Let’s throw a circus”. Well, and a circus they threw last night….. Zero Gravity Circus provided 2.5 hours of jaw-dropping colorful and amazing entertainment, the more-than-capacity crowd at the Hall at Toronto’s downtown Steamwhistle Brewery was in absolute awe and cheering wildly. When I got there at 7 pm things were a little more sedate. The stage was still being set up, and the bar area where the silent auction was going to be held had been set up already and a few G.

  • Exploring Frank Lloyd Wright In Buffalo And Serenity On Lake Ontario - My theory is a real traveler is able to discover interesting things even in the most unlikely of places. Well, Buffalo probably hasn't made the "top travel destinations" list for a while, but I have been doing some research on it and I thought it's high time to explore Buffalo, the closest American city to Toronto, just south of Niagara Falls and right across the Fort Erie border.
  • Hello From Toronto: A Bike Tour Through The Don Valley, Leaside, Salsa On St. Clair And Sunnyside Beach - My summery biking adventures through Toronto continue. This morning I packed my backpack and as usual I entered the Taylor Creek Park system. Heading down into the lush green river valley that is fully closed in by trees and bushes on both sides is always such a great feeling, as if the big city was miles away. A few kilometers west my trail joined up with the Don Valley biking trail and I started to ride south. But instead of heading all the way down to Toronto’s lakefront, I saw an old road branching off to the right north of Pottery Road and I thought I would just ride in there and see what I could discover. I had never before left the main trail and was curious to explore this new area.
