  • Auvergne Walks - There are many beautiful areas of France to explore on foot and the Auvergne region, at its heart, is surely one of the most stunning. The Auvergne is an ancient landscape, originally used to describe the territory of a Gaulish tribe, the Averni. In fact 'Vercingatorix', the leader of the Averni led the Gauls to a great victory over the Romans at 'Gergovia' in 52 BC. The 'Plain de Gergovia' is located to the south of the Auvergne's modern capital, Clermont Ferrand and is a popular tourist attraction with a memorial to Vercingatorix, a visitor centre and fine views over the city. The modern Auvergne is comprised of 4 separate departments - the Allier in the north, the Puy de Dome in the centre, the Haute-Loire to the east and the Cantal in the south.
  • The Auvergne - land of lakes and volcanoes - People are always looking for an undiscovered gem, a spot far away from the maddening (sic) crowds and the Auvergne is just such a place. So where is the Auvergne? It is located in the heart of France, in the spectacular Massif Central, a land of volcanic lakes, mountains, big skies and pure, fresh air. Approximately 3 hours south of Paris and 3 hours from the south coast the Auvergne comprises 4 separate departments - the Allier in the north, the Puy de Dome in the centre, the Haute-Loire to the east and the Cantal in the south. This beautiful region has many attractions and not least its plains, deep cut river gorges, crater lakes, plateaux and exceptional flora and fauna.
  • Sleeping Giants of the Auvergne - Situated in central France is the delightful, seemingly tranquil region known as the Auvergne. This is a land sculpted by volcanic eruptions and glacial power to create a green, abundant landscape full of big skies and crater lakes. Often likened to the Scottish Highlands or the English Lake District there is one small but potentially very important difference - the high peaks of the Auvergne are sleeping volcanoes! The 'Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne', contains France's largest concentration of recently active volcanoes.
  • Diversity of life - Massif Central - The Puy de Dome region region is part of the Auvergne department of central France. It is a land of montains, lakes and plateaus and supports a vast range of flora and fauna. Of the many things the Auvergne prizes, above all others is the fact that the people living in the region go to great lengths to ensure that they do not disrupt the habitats of both the native flora and fauna. During outings in the Auvergne you will be able to experience different protected habitats, most notable in the areas of the 'Vallé
  • If you love cheese, you'll love these - If you love cheese then you will undoubtedly be interested, and perhaps surprised, to learn that one of the major areas for quality cheese production in Europe can be found in the Auvergne region of France. Yes, no less than five cheeses have been granted AOC (Appelation d'Origine Controlee) status in the Auvergne, a figure un-matched by any other region of France. The principal cheeses are: Bleu d'Auvergne, Cantal, St. Nectaire, Fourme d'Ambert and Salers.
  • Ski in France - But not as we know it - The Massif Central in the Auvergne region in the heart of France is perhaps a surprising place to discover the art of skiing, snowboarding or even dog sledding. Just hop over to France and visit the Auvergne where hurtling down volcanic snow covered slopes is a very popular pastime. The Auvergne is home to the 'Monts Dome', a range of mountains located to the south west of Clermont Ferrand, made up of over 80 volcanoes which became extinct less than 4000 years ago. This unique landscape is made up of several high peaks (Puys)such as the Puy de la Perdix (1850m) and the Puy de Sancy (1886m).
  • Keeping Safe in the Mountains - The Massif du Sancy in the Auvergne region of France receives many thousands of visitors each year. 90% of them are cyclists, walkers and hikers, here to enjoy the spectacular volcanic scenery and experience the big skies and fresh air. The other 10% love the peace and quiet of the mountains, the relaxation of the thermal spas and the hearty food. It is of paramount importance, however, that visitors remember the sudden and dramatic climatic changes which can occur in the mountain environment - it is, therefore, essential to follow a few basic rules to ensure the safety of everyone. It may seem like common sense to think about being properly equipped in a mountain climate but many people are lulled into a false sense of security by the high summer temperatures and big, blue skies in the Sancy.
  • The Loire Wine Region Of France - Situated near Nantes in western France, the Loire Valley is one of the most picturesque winemaking areas anywhere in Europe. Following the course of the Loire river, the valley meanders from Auvergne and the Massif Central mountains to the Atlantic coast. The climate varies considerably over the wide area of the Loire valley with relatively mild weather in the west, influenced by the winds coming off the Atlantic ocean, to cold winters and warm summers in the east of the region and history shows that vines have been grown here for many centuries with wine being produced since 380 AD, if not earlier.

It has also been affected by many different civilisations over the last 2500 years and offers a rich history, culture & architecture.
