  • Book Review: Some Kind of Angel – a Sneetz and Muldoon Thriller by Melvin M. Harter - It is that time of year where you want to stock up on some books to read while on your summer vacation. Some Kind Of Angel might be one to put on your list. Melvin Harter is a retired doctor and Some Kind Of Angel is his debut into the wild world of books. In this book we get acquainted with his main characters Sneetz and Muldoon, and I suspect that we are going to see more of this duo in future books. Gilbert 'Sneetz' Schnetele is a retired heart surgeon, retired due to a DIY home improvement problem that involved a power saw lopping off a valuable digit.
  • Book Review: Unholy Domain by Dan Ronco - There are a plethora of sci-fi books that have explored what the Earth would be like after the apocalypse, and generally the apocalypse in question is a nuclear war, or some sort of plague. Unholy Domain takes this genre in a new and very thought provoking direction. One only has to spend a couple of minutes researching the history and growth of the Internet to realize how in the space of just a few years it was woven itself into the very fabric of our world.
  • How To Make Creepy Teens Costumes - Some teens this year want to take their Halloween costume to a different level -- an uber-creepy level, that is. Halloween is traditionally creepy, and a lot of teens love upping costumes to an extremely creepy level (whether approving moms like it or not). Here are ways teens can turn their Halloween costume very, very creepy. Blood Like Wine Here's an easy way teens can turn that costume very creepy. Use blood – fake blood, of course – to authenticate your scary costume. Blood capsules are sold in most retail outlets during the Halloween season, and usually retail for very cheap. Fake blood also comes in tubes or you can make your own.

But is it real? His magazine business is not doing as well as it could, and the problems of jiggling a wife and a mistress, are wearing thin on him. • The Best Psychological Thriller Since "Wait Until Dark" Is "Dressed to Kill" - Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley Dressed to Kill - 4 Stars (Excellent) "Dressed to Kill" is the most horrific psychological thriller I have seen since "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn as a recently blinded woman who is terrorized by a trio of thugs while they search for a heroin-stuffed doll they believe is in her apartment. Dressed to Kill is just as tense and scary and adds the taut elements of a steamy shower scene as the female lead Kate Miller (played by none other than Angie Dickinson) pleasures herself, a sex scene in a taxi cab that is so hot and so ahead of its time that it almost explodes the vehicle, and a razor-slitting murder scene in an elevator that is beyond graphic.
  • Do you like blank and white movies? Then you’ll love… - Are you passionate of the wonderful black and white movies? Do you enjoy the innocence of those wonderful old films where the good-guy always comes out the victor in the end and usually ends up with the girl as an added bonus? Do you enjoy a classic thriller that doesn’t force you to endure countless violent deaths and enough blood to fulfil the needs of a major-city hospital for a year? If the answer to all three is a resounding “Yes!” then have I got a treat in store for you. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet the classic old-time radio shows of the 1930s, 40s and 50s are as alive and well as they were over half a century ago. With a little Googling you can discover, or rediscover if you’

  • How I Constructed Some Kind Of Angel - Authors are frequently asked how they conceive and create a story. There may be almost as many ways as there are authors: outline; write ending and work up to it; precise factual experience or observation ("creative non-fiction;") whatever comes into your head; emotional idea; paper or audio notes; etc., etc. I can only speak for myself. IDENTIFY ONE OR TWO EXCITING EXPERIENCES For Some Kind of Angel, I drew on my long years as a disability evaluation doctor, mostly assessing injured workers within the framework of California workers compensation law. I was especially impressed with death cases and the special way the law dealt with them. About the time I was ready to write we entered the post 9/11 period. War on terror was declared and the search for what turned out to be invisible or non-existent weapons of mass destruction.

  • Love - Love songs are everywhere. But does anyone have a definition of love, which — people claim — makes the world go around? Sure, it's easy to tell when you're in love with someone. [The heart pounds and you act like an idiot.] But it's much harder to say if you actually love someone.
  • A Bore Draw When Two Times Zero Equals One - The French have rather an appropriate expression for a football game that ends in a draw – “match nul”. And that just about sums up the general sentiment after France’s opening 0-0 non-thriller against Romania at Euro 2008.

  • Internet Authors don't need timing - Of all the useless advice given to would-be authors, perhaps the most unhelpful is the idea that to be a successful author you need 'timing'. That is, your great idea for a novel has to hit the public consciousness at a time that makes your story relevant to them.

  • An Interview With Paul Mark Tag, Meteorologist Turned Author, About Prophecy - I recently had the pleasure of reading Paul Mark Tag's second novel Prophecy, and it is a riveting page turner. The concept behind the plot is just wild enough to give you pause for thought. When I read a great book, and Prophecy certainly qualifies in the category, I just feel the urge to track down the author and have a chat. Paul was gracious enough to agree. Can you tell us a little about yourself? First of all, Simon, thank you for this opportunity. Although I've lived in California since the early 1970s, I grew up in Pennsylvania. There, I took advantage of my closeness to Pennsylvania State University, majoring in meteorology for three degrees.
  • Buyers' Perceptions - Call me a scared-y-cat, but I wouldn't live next to a graveyard. It kinda' spooks me out. Yeah, I am 47, and all grown up, can do my own laundry. But the idea of zombies from Michael Jacksons "Thriller" video chasing me around my house at night isn't my idea of a good time. And you know as well as I do that zombies only hang out in graveyards. Duh. And living in some big lone gated-in manor house on a hill? No thanks. I will take my 17th floor high rise condo here in downtown Philadelphia. Because unless that strange Spiderman charachter is scaling the walls of my hi-rise, I figure I am pretty safe from chainsaw massacring psychos that have risen from the dead.

  • Common Errors Writers Make - PART 1: WRITER'S BLOCK From Rita Jamison's Freelance Writing Class; Adult Education, Los Altos, CA, 2005 At one time or another we all experience "writer's block." We have ideas. We know we have a good story to write. We just can't sit down to do it or we do sit down and just stare at the empty page — for hours on end. What's holding us up? Why does this happen? Like a doctor weaving a patient's history, physical examination and results of key laboratory results into a pattern to make a diagnosis or a detective sifting evidence to solve a crime, we must find the facts, the bits of observation and data and put them together like a jig-saw puzzle.
  • Turn Peace Of Mind Into A Habit - Let me ask you what you prefer, a restless agitated mind or peace of mind? • Ashes & Flame: Humans & Jinn - “Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.” This is believed to be the cycle of the human spiritual life by many faithful — Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus. Humans were brought forth from the earth … and to the earth they are returned. The soul is set free. Yet, there is another spiritual entity accepted by millions as real. The jinn — genies or djinn — are another aspect of God’s creation as understood by millions of Muslims and countless other sects.
  • Date Movies to Impress a Redneck Girl - Let's make one thing perfectly clear, right off: redneck date movies, for the most part, are NOT being made today. Your average chick flick is something like Sex and the City - okay for most redneck women, but not what you'd call appealing to the redneck in her. This gives you, the redneck man, a unique advantage: the only absolutely great movies are only out on DVD. This means she has to go to your home to see them - or you need to go to hers. Need I say more on this?
  • The Character’s Character – 'Show, Don't Tell' - If readers can't identify with, care about, or somehow share the feelings of the characters, despite a perfect plot and poetic prose, the story is likely to bomb. Readers must respond to the characters viscerally, with sympathy or antipathy, early on. Readers want their primitive feelings titillated. They want to feel different — better or worse — after reading the story than before. So how do you do that? Consider the following: The better the author knows the character, the better the portrayal of her is likely to be. How do you get to know her?
  • Write A Novel the Easy Way - Forget the old cliché, 'there's a novel inside everyone'. That might well be true, but the tricky part is getting it out and on to paper. I think I've discovered the secrets of writing a novel the easy way. Read on… I've served time as publisher, reviewer and writer and I've met a few authors in my time, ranging from Stephen King, Ian Rankin and Ken Follett to Ken Bruen, Terry Pratchett and Minette Walters. Although you can never lump everyone into the same pigeon-hole, generally speaking people who write books, especially novels, are 'different'.

Do you know the origins of the ever sinful witch mask? Not all originate from paganistic pasts. These are the true origins of popular Halloween masks today: the history behind witch masks, werewolf masks, and hockey masks. The True History of Witch Masks Witch masks actually do have a interesting and dark history. Europeans used to believe that witches gathered twice a year during two specific dates -- which strangely enough, coincided with Celtic festivals Beltane and Samhain -- and cause havoc for innocent citizens. These witches would ride on their wooden broomsticks and celebrate with the Devil, sometimes casting evil spells on unsuspecting citizens.
  • Common Errors Writers Make Part 2: Kill A Good Story - From Rita Jamison's Freelance Writing Workshop; Adult Education, Los Altos, CA, 2005 Your plot's great. Your theme is awesome. You have a beginning, middle and end with interesting characters — No problem sitting and writing a story; no writer's block — But it bombs. No one reads beyond page one or two. Who killed it? What are the common pitfalls you absolutely must avoid? TELLING INSTEAD OF SHOWING: Remember Creative Writing 101? Remember the most frequent error a writer makes? Remember SDT ("Show, Don’t Tell.") • Jean Paul Gaultier - Unconventional Style - Best known for his striking, controversial - sometimes, outrageous collection - Jean-Paul Gaultier (born April 24, 1952 in Arcueil, France) never received formal education as a designer. He started creating sketches at a young age and was designing clothes for his mother and grandmother by age 13. At 17, he sent the sketches to renowned couture stylists including Pierre Cardin. His talents impressed Cardin who then hired him as an assistant. Gaultier spent the next two years working for Cardin before he became a designer for Jacques Estrel and later on, for the House of Patou in Paris where he worked for three years.
  • Visceral Description: Show, Don't Tell - We don't hook a reader with logical exposition, flat narration or argument. We must get to the part of the reader's life that is involuntary, automatic: the five senses and mood/emotion. In that way we convert "tell" into "show." The visceral approach to description brings a story to life. It shatters the time tired cliché.

  • Coaching and schizophrenia - I am often asked by the managers I train what to do if a coaching session uncovers a significant psychological problem. It seems a common occurence for a coaching conversation that starts on a business issue to suddenly reveal a deeper issue.In some ways such managers should feel encouraged: people would hardly reveal deeper issues unless they felt comfortable doing so, but I also advise managers to develop a broad understanding of what is known as abnormal psychology if only so as they can point people towards the right kind of professional help.
  • Urbino, Italy: The Other Tuscany - If you love cobbled streets, terra-cotta roofs, provincial cuisine made with lamb, rabbit, swine, and cheese, you may just love Urbino. This hill town lies nestled in the calf of the boot that is Italy, in a region known as Le Marche (MAHR-kay).

Some casually browse the pages of old magazines, read the latest thriller or chat with friends as they dutifully put in their "forty five minutes" of "slow and steady". They are well-intentioned but clueless. I question the results of their efforts but decide it is unwise to offer unsolicited advice.
  • The Long And Tall Tales Of Television Today - It’s such a controversial topic today, in order to get my own conclusion, I will exam the arguments and studies of two papers: one is “The Function of Television: Life Without the Big Box” by Charles Winick who supports the functions of television;

  • What Do We Get For Our Taxes? - Tax time is coming around again. I'm reminded because I just placed my order for the 2007 version of TurboTax, which is a software application that guides me through federal and Pennsylvania tax return preparation. The damn tax code has become so complex, you really need either a good accountant or a tax package to get it right. Taxes are everywhere, on everything. • Internet Authors don't need advice - Most writers in England waste a lot of their time posting off extracts of their exciting new manuscripts to publishers. Most of the time these would-be authors see their work come winging back, unwanted. That's annoying enough in itself, but in some cases there is an even more unwelcome addition – advice. 'Try a larger publishing house' says the note. That's meant to be helpful? Which publisher do they have in mind? What makes them think the other guys would want something that people here have decided is unpublishable?
  • Genre And Niche For The Freelance Creative Writer - A freelance creative writer has to think carefully about what genre they should write in and how it can be marketed to a niche. If you do creative writing rather than tutorial or non fiction writing, don't dismiss the value of a niche to display your work in. Some people say there are no niches for creative writers.
  • Alternatives to story telling - There aren't any! There, I've spoiled it for you, told you the ending before I even set the scene and outlined the case. Sorry, that's not very good practice, but it proves my point. We all love a good story, one with a start, some middle and a proper ending. We can't help it, we were born that way. We were hardwired from birth to accept facts, information, history and learning in that structured way.

  • Have We Achieved Our Objectives In Iraq? - Exactly where are we in this conflict? It's difficult to cut through to the truth with so much hot air coming from all sides. I decided to go back and read the Joint Resolution approved October 2002 by the President and the Senate authorizing the invasion or liberation (take your pick) of Iraq. It begins with a bunch of whereas clauses summarizing the then current situation: Iraq had been kicked out of Kuwait and had agreed not to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, and Iraq would not support terrorism; weapons inspectors had been forced to withdraw in 1998 and Congress had declared that Iraq's continued development of weapons of mass destruction threatened world peace; the Iraqi regime continued to brutalize its civilian population;
