  • America's Middle Distance Running Disaster at the 2008 Beijing Olympics - Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley Despite all of the United States' great success in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, there was next to nothing to cheer about its middle distance runners in the track and field competition. America's hopes rode squarely on the shoulders of Bernard Lagat and Ryan Hall. The Kenyan-born Lagat had become an American citizen and was a proven winner in international competition, and Hall had become our American-born hope to medal and perhaps win in the marathon. Lagat sought gold in the 1500 and 5000-meter runs. In the end, neither of them was even close enough to think about sniffing a medal. Worse yet, all of America's men and women competitors in the 800, 1500, 5000, 10,000, 3,000 steeplechase and the marathon could muster only 1 of 36 possible medals.

  • Why Isn’t All Furniture Shelving Units? - Shelving units are possibly the most useful piece of furniture that has ever been invented. Really, think about it, what better furniture can you think of. Don’t try to compare beds or sofas to shelving units, because that’s just cheating. Think about storage furniture. You like drawers, you say. Oh but drawers fall down in many aspects. First is that they need to be opened, which is all fine and well for the first few thousand times you open them. After that, they begin to go wrong. The drawers can stick as you pull them for many reasons. Wood can warp, metal can rust, runners can fall off, drawers can fall off their runners. Drawers handles can fall off, leaving you with a struggle to get inside.
  • Agility Training – Some Basic Steps - As an athlete, you should always be looking for ways to (legally) enhance your performance. Runners will work out their legs, baseball players will work out their core muscles and upper body, but all athletes should work on their speed and agility. Most athletes will need to work on a few basic areas: Flexibility – No, you may not be a gynmast, but having extended levels of flexibility will give you an edge over your competition. Keeping your muscles stretched and flexible will allow you to make more natural movements, without fear of injury or cramping, as well as commit to movements that are a bit unconventional or strenuous. No one expects you to gain the flexibility of a Ninja overnight, but working on your physical limits will eventually increase them. Exercises that emphasize stretching and flexible resistance are key to developing flexibility.
